wine grapeOrganic wines are simply a selection of wines produced by means of organic farming methods. The process starts by growing the grapes the organic way, that is, without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals produced through industrial means. But that is just putting it in the most simple terms. There are also other definitions for the meaning of "organic".

Organic means that everything should be done in a natural way. In grape farming or viticulture, this means that grapes are grown without any added sulfites. That can be considered as its one of the things considered for making organic wines, although this can be heavily debated among winemakers and grape growers in the international scene. At least, that is the standard for organic wines used in the US.

With making organic wines, the practice of conventional farming may also be avoided. Conventional farming practices that has been adopted in large part for over five decades have resulted in the deterioration of soil quality, stripping it of essential minerals needed to grow healthy plants. For this reason, conventional farming increasingly depends on the use of more and more artificial means to increase soil productivity which further worsens the condition.

For this reason organic farming practices is adopted in part to help stop the vicious cycle brought about by conventional farming practices. At the heart of organic farming of grapes is a healthy soil. Maintaining healthy soil conditions through natural means is the primary objective of organic farming. Organic farming means that commercial fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and insecticides.

In winemaking organic means that the grapes are processed without using chemical additives as well as using grapes that are cultivated organically. In the wine making process, the organic wine makers take particular attention in the use of yeasts and sulfur dioxide as well as in the filtration and refining process in considering if the wine is organic.
